SMT Moves Toward High‑Density Packaging – Nitrogen Inerting Becomes a Critical Process

As smartphones, wearables, and automotive electronics demand smaller and more integrated components, the SMT industry is rapidly adopting ultra‑small passives like 0201 and 01005. These smaller components pose challenges for reflow and wave soldering, especially regarding solder oxidation and dross formation.

Nitrogen inerting creates an oxygen‑free atmosphere inside the soldering furnace, reducing solder oxidation, lowering dross production, and improving wetting and electrical reliability. Studies show that nitrogen protection can cut bridging defects on fine‑pitch (0.4 mm) components by more than 60% and leave less flux residue.

Top EMS companies are now standardizing on‑site nitrogen systems on their high‑end lines. Compared to liquid or cylinder nitrogen, PSA generators can cut gas costs by over 50% while eliminating production interruptions caused by cylinder changes. Jinbao Machinery’s A‑Series modular generators supply 99.99% pure nitrogen at flow rates from 353–3,531 SCFH, with a width of only 380 mm – easily placed beside an SMT line.

As domestic alternatives accelerate, more small and medium‑sized electronics factories are adopting on‑site nitrogen generation. It is expected that within two to three years, nitrogen inerting will become a standard feature for mid‑to‑high‑end SMT lines.
